Deb has arranged a video catch-up with her sister. She wants the conversation, but does not want to appear in her dressing gown with her hair as it is. Claiming the camera is broken seems easier, until one wrong click brings her into view. Telling Rosie what happened, Deb remembers the hairbrush concerts she had asked Rosie to keep: looking polished was never part of those either. Her sister reveals she has only dressed the top half. Both laugh, leave their cameras on and spend forty minutes talking about a cushion, a fence and other perfectly ordinary things.
Rosie asks about the feeling behind Deb's excuse and recalls a memory Deb explicitly chose to keep. The warmth comes from the sisters finding room for an unpolished catch-up. This fictional incident is a video call between sisters, rather than a demonstration of a LonelyNo camera feature. Deb: I said my camera was broken. Then it switched on.
Rosie: Didn't you want to see her?
Deb: My sister? Very much. I just didn't want her seeing me.
Deb: We'd arranged a video catch-up. Dressing gown, hair everywhere. I said the camera wasn't working. Very dignified.
Rosie: What brought it back?
Deb: I clicked the camera button while explaining the fault. There I was. In excellent definition.
Rosie: What did your sister say?
Deb: 'Nice dressing gown.' I nearly switched it off. Then said, 'I wanted to see you. I just look a state.'
Rosie: The hairbrush concerts you asked me to keep weren't formal occasions.
Deb: Exactly. She'd seen considerably worse. Usually holding a wooden spoon.
Rosie: What happened when you admitted it?
Deb: She pointed her camera down. Pyjama bottoms. 'I've only dressed the top half.' We both started laughing.
Rosie: Did you leave the camera on?
Deb: Forty minutes. Nothing important. A cushion she'd bought. Her neighbour's new fence. Exactly the sort of chat I'd missed.
Deb: My camera made a miraculous recovery. The dressing gown stayed for the entire meeting.
