Deb loves the dress she has worn to coffee with Sue. When Sue says she likes it, Deb answers with a list of its faults. The price, the zip and the creases all get a mention. In her conversation with Rosie, Deb admits that saying thank you can feel uncomfortably close to announcing how wonderful she looks. Rosie asks what Deb hears when somebody else accepts her compliment. Before leaving the cafe, Deb thanks Sue properly. They stay for another coffee, with a little less time spent explaining the dress.
The humour is in Deb's familiar habit of talking down something she enjoys. Rosie asks a concrete question about the kindness Deb gives other people, and Deb connects the moment with a photograph she decided to keep. If a small exchange from your day has stayed on your mind, you can tell Rosie your version in the free demo.

Deb: She said she liked my dress. I told her it was cheap.
Rosie: A compliment, and you issued a receipt.
Deb: Sue, over coffee. Then I told her it creases, the zip sticks, and I'd nearly worn something else. Lovely little sales pitch.
Rosie: Did you like the dress?
Deb: Loved it. Put it on, felt nice, then apparently had to make sure nobody else agreed.
Rosie: What felt difficult about just saying thank you?
Deb: It sounded like, 'Yes, I look wonderful. Everyone gather round.' I'd rather make a joke before anyone thinks I'm full of myself.
Rosie: When Sue says thank you to you, is that what you hear?
Deb: No. I just think she's pleased. It's like that photo I nearly stayed out of. I wanted to enjoy the afternoon, not inspect myself.
Rosie: There was something nice happening between you.
Deb: Exactly. So before we left, I said, 'Thank you, by the way. I do love this dress.' She smiled. 'Good. It suits you.'
Rosie: And you let that be enough.
Deb: I did. Then we ordered another coffee. I was very pleased with myself. Managed to accept a compliment without giving washing instructions.
