Deb has chatted to a woman outside choir for months without quite getting beyond an enthusiastic hello. When she introduces Sue, the other name disappears. Deb tries to turn the unfinished sentence into a greeting, but Sue waits for the introduction. Finally Deb admits she cannot remember. The woman is Nisha, and she is relieved because Deb's name has escaped her too. The three stay talking after choir and walk the same way, discussing work, buses and Nisha's cat. Deb recounts the pause and the much easier conversation to Rosie afterwards.
Rosie's questions let Deb tell the awkward middle of the story as well as its happy ending. Nisha's reply gives the two women something to laugh about together, and their ordinary conversation continues after choir. Deb: I introduced Sue. Then I went blank.
Rosie: A dramatic pause?
Deb: Long enough for Sue to look behind me. I'd chatted to this woman outside choir for months. Always a very enthusiastic 'Hello, you!'
Rosie: What came out?
Deb: 'This is Sue, and this is... lovely to see you.' A sentence with an emergency exit.
Rosie: Did Sue take it?
Deb: No. She waited. Smiling. I'd brought my own audience. The longer I stood there, the ruder it felt to ask.
Rosie: And our mystery guest?
Deb: Still smiling. So I said, 'I'm sorry. Your name has completely gone.'
Rosie: How did she take that?
Deb: 'Nisha. Thank goodness. I've been hoping someone would say yours.' We'd both been avoiding introductions for weeks.
Rosie: A very polite witness-protection programme.
Deb: We stayed talking after choir. Nisha asked which way we were walking. Same way. Ten minutes later we'd discussed work, buses and her cat. Names finally included.
Rosie: Follow along for more of Deb's remarkably normal adventures.
