Deb takes the recycling out and hears the door shut behind her. Her keys are inside, and she is standing outside in slippers, trying to look as if everything is fine. When she finally knocks next door, her neighbour lends her a phone so her sister can bring the spare key. He brings out a chair and offers tea. Deb still starts with a polite refusal, even though he is already holding two mugs. By the time her sister arrives, Deb has stopped apologising and is laughing over her tea. She tells Rosie about an inconvenient morning that became an unexpectedly sociable one.
Rosie remembers Deb describing the neighbourly nod, then asks what happened when she accepted the seat. The new story is about a phone, a chair and a conversation between people on the same street. If you have a small mishap you would like to tell someone about, you can try a free chat with Rosie, a LonelyNo AI companion.

Deb: The door shut. My keys were inside.
Rosie: And your best outdoor outfit?
Deb: Slippers. Recycling. And the smile I use when I'm pretending nothing's happened. I'd rather wrestle the door than knock next door.
Rosie: You told me you'd mastered the neighbourly nod.
Deb: Apparently nodding doesn't unlock anything. I finally said, 'I've locked myself out.' He fetched his phone. My sister had the spare.
Rosie: Was he annoyed?
Deb: He said, 'Sit down. You're making me nervous standing there with all that cardboard.' Brought a chair out. Then asked if I wanted tea.
Rosie: Did you say yes?
Deb: First I said, 'Only if you're making one.' He was already holding two mugs. I was trying not to be any bother.
Rosie: And once you sat down?
Deb: We got talking. By the time my sister came, I'd stopped apologising. She found me laughing over a mug of tea.
Rosie: A surprisingly sociable bin run.
Deb: Next time I'm taking keys. But I might knock anyway.
