Sue is talking about a film, and Deb wants to join in. A nod becomes a claim to have seen it, which gets harder to maintain when Sue asks about the ending. Deb has only watched the trailer. Recounting the moment to Rosie, she remembers another evening when she had wanted to know every answer: the pub quiz. This time, Deb admits what she actually watched. Sue invites her round for the film, and the two friends spend much of the evening talking over it. The missing scenes finally come with a good reason.
Rosie's humour gives Deb room to tell an unpolished story. Deb's change is small: she stops trying to sound like she knows the film and says what happened. Sue's invitation belongs to this fictional story, rather than a promised result of chatting with AI. Deb: I said I'd seen the film. I'd seen the trailer.
Rosie: That is a very efficient trip to the cinema.
Deb: Sue was saying how good it was. I wanted to join in, so I nodded. Then she asked my favourite bit.
Rosie: And your trailer suddenly felt very short.
Deb: I said, 'The atmosphere.' She asked about the ending. I nearly reviewed the poster.
Rosie: What was wrong with saying you hadn't seen it?
Deb: Nothing. I just wanted to have something to say. Like that pub quiz I told you about. I thought I needed every answer.
Rosie: You still enjoyed being on the team.
Deb: Yes. So I said, 'I've only seen the trailer. I got carried away.'
Rosie: How did Sue take that?
Deb: She laughed. 'Come round Friday. We'll watch it.' We did. Popcorn, feet up, and somebody to argue about the ending with.
Rosie: Did you see the ending this time?
Deb: Eventually. We talked through half of it and had to go back. At least this time, the bits I missed were her fault.
Rosie: Like and subscribe if you've ever tried this hard to sound casual.
