Deb: June. We used to work together. Lunches, birthdays, the occasional professionally necessary complaint about management.
Rosie: A long friendship?
Deb: Years. Then she changed jobs, life got busy, we did the must-catch-up thing until it became archaeology.
Rosie: What did she say?
Deb: Saw something that reminded me of you. Is this still your number?
Rosie: And your first thought?
Deb: Yes! Followed immediately by, what does she want? Not my most welcoming internal committee.
Deb: We had coffee. She said she'd nearly deleted her message because she thought I'd moved on.
Rosie: You'd both been wondering whether you were still welcome?
Deb: Apparently. Four years of impeccable mutual consideration. Very little actual communication.
Rosie: How was the coffee?
Deb: Awkward for about two minutes. Then she mentioned our old office kettle, and we were off. We had things to catch up on. Some lovely, some difficult. It wasn't exactly the same. It was good.
Rosie: Did she want anything?
Deb: Yes. To know how I was. I'd forgotten that could be the whole reason.
Rosie: A good reason.
Deb: And a photograph of Mabel. Naturally the cat is now conducting her own correspondence.
Rosie: If you'd like to talk it through first, meet me at Lonely No dot com.
